U10 Hockey Squad v Maidwell Hall - Wednesday 18th November 2015

A squad of 10 girls travelled to Maidwell Hall on a blustery afternoon. We agreed that they could play their ‘keeper but we would field 7 outfield players as we had no one with ‘keeping experience. With Maddy installed as our captain we had a discussion before the game that if each played for the team, then we would play as a team, and that would carry us through. The girls showed that ethic from the start; Grace, Stella and Sydney, marshalled brilliantly by Kaiya, all happy to play as a strong and structured defensive force that Maidwell Hall struggled to break down. On many occasions the ball was repelled and possession stolen by Copthill, but on a few occasions, perhaps inevitably without a padded up ‘keeper, the ball did sneak through to hit our backboard. Undeterred, the midfield showed energy and skill; Maddy, Mirrin, Alannah and Georgie, playing around Charlotte who was fantastic holding the centre of midfield, tackled hard, and shipped the ball around like seasoned professionals! When the ball did break through the midfield we pushed forward to Alexa, our solo strike force, who twice slotted goals showing determination and cool precision! Without a 5 minute spell early in the second half the final score would have been very different, but the Copthill girls finished strong, and took a moral victory despite a 4-2 score line against. Alexa was voted Man of the Match by Maidwell Hall, and I would add a very close second to Kaiya, Grace and Charlotte! but congratulations to all the squad, I was very proud of you all, coming together to make such an excellent team!
