U11 ISA 5 a-side Football - Friday 8th March 2019

Copthill took a team of U11 boys to Southend-on-sea to take part in the regional ISA football.

The boys started fantastically well beating Ipswich 2-0 in the opening game. I have never seen football played so well in my time at Copthill as they took the group by storm scoring a staggering 19 goals in just 5 matches and conceding 0!! This was unbelievable football and I knew we had a very good squad of players and a terrific chance of winning not only the regional competition but the national!

We spoke about how well they played and that it was not a formality to win the competition just because of how well we played in the group stages and all the boys took this on board, understood very well and showed a very mature attitude throughout, as they to, knew they could win this!

However, it was not to be. Having scored in 40 seconds of the quarter final to put us 1-0 up and I thought ‘here comes another demolition’, they scored a freak goal which bounced over the keeper and then they scored a free kick in virtually the last kick of the game!!

I was deflated, especially for the boys and all of us were somewhat speechless at what had happened! All the play was ours throughout the match and we must of hit the woodwork at least 5 times and missed a host of chances!

But that’s football - a funny old game.

I want to wish all the year 6 boys the very best of luck as they move to secondary schools and I hope they keep their football going because are some of the most talented boys I’ve ever worked with in my time at Copthill! For the year 5’s who came, we go go again next year!!
