Year 5 and 6 Brooke Priory Athletics Event

On Thursday 14th May twenty pupils from years 5/6 set off for the annual Brooke Priory athletics meeting. This year there were four schools competing: Copthill, Brooke Priory, Grantham Prep and Leicester Grammar.  There were some grey clouds looming, however the weather looked like it would hold, so Brooke made the decision to go ahead with the event at 2pm. The first event was combined and involved everyone in the 75m baton relay in which the year 6’s finished second and the year 5’s finished fourth.

As is often the way with the great British weather, it can go either way.  Unfortunately, this time the heavens then decided to open. In true Copthill fighting spirit, our pupils showed true grit and got stuck in, despite being wet and cold for much of the time.

All the pupils took part in five events: 75m sprint, 400m, standing long jump, junior shot putt, speed bounce (two footed jump over a low hurdle for 20 seconds). The girls and boys competed separately in these events and rotated around each event. The scores were added up at the end, with first position scoring 10 points and fifth scoring 2 points.

Due to the persistent drizzle, the meeting had to finish early for safety concerns about people slipping. Despite this, the competition as always was stiff.  Our year 5’s finished fourth overall and our year 6’s finished in second position.

Although I tried to take some action shots of the pupils competing the school iPad did not like the rain and kept malfunctioning. Nevertheless, we have a few good pictures for the blog.

A special mention should be made about William Kong’s amazing shot putt throw. Watch out for this pupil in years to come. Maisy Brownlow should also be mentioned for her gutsy performance in the 400m race.

A massive well done to everyone who took part and represented the school.

Mrs Klimes.
