U9 and U11 Athletics Tournament at Leicester Grammar Junior School on 18th May

With Year 5 enjoying the sunshine at Camp Copthill, we took our best all-round athletes from Year 4 and Year 6 to Leicester for the annual "Quad Kids" Athletics Tournament.

Competing against seven other schools there is always strong competition in the 5 disciplines: 400/600 m long distance, 50/75 m sprint, 50 m shuttle relay, standing long jump and vortex throw, and this year was to be no different.

The U9 Girls started on the sprints, followed by the vortex throw, doing well in both which gave them confidence heading for the long distance race. The U9 Boys were a strong team, excelling in the the running events; shuttle relay, sprints and long distance. The U11 Girls enjoyed the shuttle relay, showed real character to do well in the long distance, and finished strongly in the long jump. The U11 Boys competed fiercely against some very talented athletes, with impressive individual performances in the sprints and throw, all leading to their final event; the gruelling 600 m.

It was a very busy 2 hours. Each team had to stay focused as they rotated through the disciplines without much time for rest. All the Copthill athletes acquitted themselves very well in the competition, but just as important, Mrs Lamb and I were delighted to see the teams organising themselves, encouraging each other, and keeping a smile on their faces despite their exertions.

When the team scores were announced it was the U9 Girls team that had performed best for Copthill with a fantastic third place! Our other teams did very well, but didn't quite reach the lofty heights of the podium.

Well done to all the athletes who took part. It was a fantastic effort by you all and we hope you enjoyed the experience. Mrs Lamb and I were very proud of you. Well done!
