U10 A & B v Ratcliffe - Wednesday 27th February 2019
A beautiful, if unseasonably warm day at Ratcliffe College greeted Copthill as they left the coach. We always enjoy close competitive matches against our friends from Ratcliffe so were looking forward to the challenge ahead.
U10A's started brightly. Pressing in midfield and looking very assured in defence, it wasn't long before the breakthrough was made; Copthill going one up. The game was ebb and flow, but Copthill worked hard and were rewarded with a second well taken goal. With a reminder to the boys to use the full width of the pitch, a tactic mastered by a well organised Ratcliffe side, we looked more threatening as the game went on, and secured the game with two more excellent goals. A great effort from all the boys, congratulations on a 4-0 win. Special mention to Monty for a commanding performance in the centre of midfield and two goals. Well done!
U10B's set up with solid defence, aiming to press high up the pitch and keep the pressure on the opposition. The tactic looked sound as Copthill held the lions share of early possession, but we were too often playing too central to the pitch, which made it relatively easy to defend against us. Despite lots of running and passing in our midfield and attacking positions, we just couldn't find the final touch to put us on the scoreboard. The second half continued in the same manner, albeit Ratcliffe managed slick counter attacks so our defence were kept busier. Again, Copthill came so close to a goal on a number of occasions, including the very last 20 seconds, but it wasn't to be and the match ended with a creditable 0-0 draw. Congratulations to all the boys for playing such high tempo hockey all the way through the match. A great effort! Particular mention to Luke for pressing forward with purpose and skill, and to Milan for holding his wide position, running hard and creating some wonderful attacking moves that so nearly paid off. Well done!
