Oakham hockey training with International players

The girls were full of excitement as we headed off to Oakham School for an afternoon of expert coaching from a selection of England hockey players.  The special guests included Maddie Hinch (GB Goalkeeper), Zoe Shipperley (GB defender), Ellie Watton (GB forward) and Ollie Willars (GB defender).  The weather looked doubtful and fingers were crossed by everyone all afternoon that the rain would hold off.  This it did and the girls embraced this fantastic opportunity with determination and eagerness.

On arriving at Oakham, the girls were all presented with a t.shirt that they quickly changed into.  Thankfully Copthill's distinctive red and blue socks enabled Mrs Harriss, Mrs Klimes and Mrs Lamb to spot and observe our girls amongst the many children participating all dressed the same!

The girls rotated around a number of different drills and skills with the different coaches.  Jemima Hitcham (Year 5) and Izzy York-Forward (Year 6) were both full of enthusiasm as they focussed on a selection of goal keeping exercises led by the world famous Maddie Hinch.

At the end of the afternoon the girls tucked into their well deserved after training tea and they listened intently as the International players gave their inspirational talk to the girls.

Throughout the afternoon points were awarded to individual players for ability and effort.  The team that collected the most points together were the winning nation.  Copthill received some prizes for this achievement.  

Copthill were also delighted when Ags Pennell (Year 6) was identified and awarded one of only four U11 Future Player Awards.  This special and rather impressive trophy was awarded by Ellie Watton and Ags should feel very proud of her achievement.

After the presentation the girls excitedly collected autographs and sporting wristbands before heading back to school.  

Well done to all of the girls who took part in a very successful and inspirational afternoon of hockey.
