U11 Boys Hockey Tournament v SJS and Maidwell 30th January 2019
On a very cold afternoon at Stamford, the decision was made to take outfield players rather than goalie's. It was a strategy to keep all the boys warm and running around, but to be successful it would rely on a strong, well organised defences. Fortunately at Copthill we have players who excel in that role, so when Copthill 1 and 2 played their opening games it soon became apparent that we could press high in the midfield, happy in the knowledge that our defence was sound.
Copthill 1 had most of the possession and pressure in our first game against Stamford, but just hadn't quite got the radar set, missing the goal by inches time after time. However, the build up play through the midfield was excellent so it was no surprise when their accuracy finally matched their determination, and a winning goal was scored in the second game. After a short team talk and tea break to warm up on a bitterly cold afternoon, Copthill 1 took on Maidwell with renewed vigour, and this time all the opportunities that were created were tucked away with finesse! A fantastic display of technical hockey and teamwork! The final game also featured some sublime team hockey; solid defence, energetic and creative midfield, determined and talented attack.
Well done boys. One of the most complete hockey performances I have watched in a long time! Particular congratulations to William I who was outstanding, scoring 5 goals, including a hat-trick!

Maidwell 2 v Copthill 1 1-5 w
Maidwell 1 v Copthill 1 0-3 w
Copthill 2 performed very well as a team. The defence was strong and we looked sharp and dangerous whenever we pushed forward. The attitude and sportsmanship of every player was outstanding. We didn’t concede a goal in the whole tournament. To improve we need to focus on passing into space, not at defenders.
