U9b Football v Grantham Wed 11th January 2017

What a great way to kick off the new term; a football match with our friends at Grantham Prep. Copthill U9 squad divided into two even ability teams to play a triangular tournament. Colin Earle and Rory Driver were asked to captain the Copthill teams.

The first game between Copthill and Grantham saw Colin's team under pressure for the first half. Despite some excellent defensive play from the boys, eventually a Grantham scored from close range just before half time. Regrouping for the second half (and with the wind behind us!) Copthill posed a greater attacking threat, with some lovely midfield play by Colin and Logan, and a fine goal from the ever-present and energetic Oliver Tooze! Full time 1-1.

The two Copthill teams battled out an enjoyable draw in the second game. Again, it was end to end football in which everyone was fully involved. The defences shone as they absorbed continual attacks on goal from both sides. Full time 0-0.

Rory's team stayed on the pitch for the final game against Grantham. Copthill looked stronger from the first whistle, and had the majority of early possession, continually turning a secure defence into speedy counter attacks. We perhaps needed a little more composure in front of goal as four or five chances went by - some missing by inches, others well saved by Grantham. Thankfully for Copthill, deep in the second half, one of Rory's trademark breaks found him one on one with the keeper, and this time he casually slipped it into the bottom corner!  Full time 1-0

Well done to all the boys. The tournament was played in the right spirit, with lots of enthusiasm and skill on show! Thanks to the two Captains for leading their teams so well, and congratulations to Rory Driver and Oliver Tooze for their Man of the Match performances.
