U11 Cricket v Laxton JS

U11 A Cricket

Copthill U11s played their first cricket match of the term away against laxton on Wednesday 26th April.

It was played at oundle school on a lovely wicket. However the weather wasn't so lovely and therefore unfortunately there was no winner from the match.

Laxton batted first and were reduced to just 43 runs from 12 overs. This would've been a reachable target and I believe copthill would've gone on to win the game, however it wasn't to be as the inclement weather put pay to that.

Well done to all the boys for sticking at it in horrible conditions for cricket!

U11 B Cricket

On a cold and windy afternoon, Copthill B team were ready to play down on the wet meadow in the heart of Oundle. The rain and mist descended, it was definitely not cricket weather. The grass was wet and fingers were cold but the brave cricketers, led be captain Owen James, wrapped up warm and prepared for the match. The skipper won the toss and opted to bowl first. It was an AstroTurf wicket which meant the ball was kept alive with a a spring in its bounce. It was a long wicket but the Copthill boys tried hard and many balls headed straight for the wicket. Sadly, none managed to clip the bails.

It was the first game of the season so some of the bowling was a little off point and this was Freddie Bedford's debut, difficult conditions for your first appearance. It was particularly tricky because it was a large pitch with a wide boundary and the Laxton boys were obviously used to playing in the long grass and on the raised wicket. After eleven 8 ball overs the home team had scored a respectable 274 runs.

Copthill put on their pads and headed into bat with a hefty target to chase. By this time the weather had turned for the worse and blue fingers and shivering lips faced the Laxton fast bowlers. Unfortunately, a series of early wickets were taken and the Copthill batsmen were starting to panic under the pressure. Laxton took three in a row, but then the clouds started to part. The following pairs started to build a steady score count with cheeky runs being taken when possible but no one could quite reach the boundary on this gargantuan field. Finley Smith was last into bat with 40 runs to score off 8 balls! It was a valiant effort but the boys couldn't quite catch the runaways after the early wickets.

All of the players gave their all and didn't complain once about the arctic conditions. Marmite sandwiches and cake were consumed in haste as both teams rushed towards the warmth of the school building. Man of the Match goes to Charlie Plant for his straight as an arrow bowling and Finley Smith for his Thor like batting. Well done.

U11 C Cricket

The U11 C team won well against Laxton and all players put in a tremendous amount of effort.
