U9 Boys Hockey v Stamford Junior School and Witham Hall Saturday 18th March

A squad of 14 boys arrived early at Stamford School astroturf, eager for their final match of the season; a potentially tricky triangular against Stamford Junior and Witham Hall. Copthill assembled two well balanced teams from our talented squad; Lions and Tigers.

First up, Stamford. The Tigers made short work of their game. Starting at pace they took an early lead, but they didn't get carried away, they held their shape and played as a team to finish 5-0 up. Excellent play from all the boys, but particularly Eshan and Sam who dominated the midfield and forward line. Meanwhile the Lions were in a much closer game, twice ahead only to be pegged back, but eventually their greater possession paid dividends, and the winning goal went in under constant Copthill pressure. 3 - 2 it finished, a great team performance, but particular mention to Marcus and Stan for their energetic and creative attacking play.

Buoyed by our success, we didn't mind the quick turnaround to our next matches against Witham Hall. The Tigers had a much tighter game, but did not buckle under the pressure. Great defensive work by James, Colin and Joshua, and bags of energy going forward from Austin and William ensured they stayed in the hunt. True to form the deserved winner came, and it finished 1 - 0. A great result. The Lions again played an exciting  attacking game, Elliott coming close to scoring early on. A little later, having taken the lead, and despite committed defending by Ralph and Harry, Witham got through to equalise. Rory and Aran stayed calm in the midfield, launching our forwards with controlled passing, so it was no surprise when the winner came with five minutes to go. We held that lead until the whistle. 2 - 1 the final score.

Congratulations to all the boys for demonstrating such skill and teamwork! Leaving with four wins out of four you can be very proud of yourselves. It was a brilliant display with which to finish an excellent season. Mr Thomas and myself were also very proud, and rightly awarded Man of the Match status to you all!

Many thanks to all those who captained on the day, and particular mention to Sam and Eshan, Stan and Marcus, whose skill and energy made telling contributions to the outcome of each team.

well done!
