Boys Hockey v Wisbech on Wednesday 6th February 2019

Copthill travelled to Wisbech on Wednesday to play hockey with the U9 A&B and U11 A&B teams.

All the boys played well and tried very hard. The U9A team won 2-1 and the B team lost 5-0.

The U11A team won 2-1 playing some excellent hockey preparing themselves well for the ISA tournament tomorrow! The stick skills from some of the boys were fantastic, creating some great chances in front of goal. The Wisbech goalkeeper was outstanding in making a number of vital blocks, particularly in the second half. I was very impressed with the attitude of all the boys and I hope this continues tomorrow when they travel to Lee Valley and for the remainder of the hockey season. All the boys getting players of the match. Well done to all of you.

Mr T Smith

Worries about the long journey were instantly put to one side as Copthill U11B played high tempo hockey from the start. In the early midfield exchanges, neither team could keep possession so play ran up and down the centre, contrary to our pre-match strategy to use our pace in the wide channels. With our excellent goalie and defenders set and organised we had the confidence to push forward, holding long periods of possession in the opposition half. Our wide players were now being fed so we started to get half chances and then some clear shots on goal, only to be denied by their skilful and sizeable goalie. Just before the half time whistle we had another break on the right, crossed into Austin who hit a hard and beautifully angled shot into the far corner of the goal! Over half time we reaffirmed our plan to hold our shape and play the wide channels, so it was no surprise when great team play allowed our midfield to push up the right and cross. There was Otto, stepping in from the left to the centre of the D and he doubles our lead with a sweet finish. Credit to all the team for a fantastic display of hockey throughout, our midfield and forwards rotating on and off to give everyone a breather whilst our back three stayed solid and focused. Special mention to Ralph who was exceptional in organising the defence and tenacious in the numerous tackles he made to stop some dangerous counter-attacks. It ended 2-0 to Copthill. Well done boys, a great result.
