U10B Hockey v Kimbolton 20th January 2017

Kimbolton School has always been the most accomplished hockey opposition we play, so our first match of the term would be an excellent test of how far we have progressed....

With Henry Sullivan-Porteous doubling up in goal for both matches we had confidence at the back, we knew our midfield would run endlessly and compete hard, so the question for the team was could they combine their developing skills in attack to unlock a solid Kimbolton defence?

The some excellent play in the first half from Captain Ruben Baker, ably assisted in the midfield by an energetic William Fraser, William Baker, and William Cole, did more than keep Kimbolton at bay. Copthill had the majority of the possession, and were constantly pushing forward, allowing Alec Telford and Raj Sisodia to run onto the ball in strong attacking positions.

As is often the way, late in the first half we left ourselves too open, and Kimbolton demonstrated how dangerous they can be. A fast counter attack and clinical finishing put us 1-0 down at half time..

The second half was a much more defensive effort. Kimbolton had clicked into gear, were holding possession in the midfield, and were pressing hard. Stuart Hodge held firm in defence with our retreating midfield. We soaked up the pressure with some excellent tackling, but eventually the accurate Kimbolton passing and movement got the better of us, and goals were conceded as game wore on.

To their immense credit Copthill stayed in the game, competing hard right to the final whistle. Although the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline, Copthill clearly demonstrated the heart, endeavour and courage we would expect, but also a huge improvement in their skill levels. Well done! The challenge for the boys is to bring their endeavour and skills together with game strategy and assured teamwork.

Thank you to all our Parent Supporters, and to Ruben for his calm captaincy. Congratulations to all the boys for their efforts, and to Man of the Match Ruben for his determination and energy in the midfield.
