Copthill U9 A Rugby v Stamford JS & Witham Hall on Thurs 29th September 2016

Copthill U 9 ‘A’ against SJS and Witham, Thursday 29th September 2016
In their second and third games of the season, the U 9 ‘A’ team showed they are progressing rapidly.  The first game against SJS saw a dominant display with strong running from Stan Halden, Logan Todd and Sam Chesworth.  Our tackling was good and Rory driver and Marcus Oliver were consistent in putting the opposition players down with their first up hits.  The final score of 3-13 showed how well we had finished off several moves.
The second game against Witham was a much tougher affair.  Witham were well organised in defence and their strike runners had more pace than we did.  Some fantastic defence on our own line saw a half time score of 4-2 to Witham.  During the second half, the effect of having played a full thirty minute game immediately before began to tell as did an accumulation of injuries.  Copthill stuck at it but our defence became ragged and was consistently sucked in towards the breakdown.  Despite this, we fought bravely for a final score of 6-3.  The team should be very proud of their efforts and the sportsmanship and attitude they displayed throughout was excellent.  If we had played Witham without a previous game in our legs, the result could have been very different.

For the next game we will work on keeping a flat and organised defensive line at breakdowns and ensuring that the pass receiver when we have the ball is standing deep enough at the breakdown to take the ball at pace rather than standing still.
