U11B Girls Hockey @ Stamford Hockey Festival 21st September 2016

Due to last minute illness and injury, a much changed U11B Team travelled to Stamford. However, we were very fortunate to be able to draft in Georgie, Felicity and Kiara as willing and skilled replacements. The new-look team, with Eliana moving to goal keeper, came together remarkably quickly. All the girls communicating well, finding their positions and playing their part in our first match against Stamford Junior School. Emily, Jessica, Felicity and Beatrice bossed the early exchanges, holding the midfield and pressing the Stamford goal. As Stamford started to find their feet, we realised that they had a quick and effective counter-attack, giving our defence plenty to think about. It was a very close game with both teams having opportunities to score, but unfortunately for Copthill, a Stamford attack finally got through. Much though we tried, we just couldn't find the finish we felt our efforts deserved. A lovely game, great to watch and play, we emerged the wrong side of a 1-0 scoreline, but were eager for more!

After a long wait we returned to the action against an in-form Stoneygate team. We had watched them do very well at Laxton last week, so we knew they had plenty of skill, and a speedy passing game. For the first half we refused to be intimidated; we tackled hard, kept our positions, held possession for as long as we could, and tried to use the wings to push forward our attacks. Inevitably perhaps, the slick passing and off-the-ball movement of Stoneygate got the better of us, and we lost a few goals in quick succession - one being a borderline decision as Eliana acrobatically swiped the ball off her goal line! We were learning the hard way, but we continued to give 110%, and battled to the final whistle with energy and enthusiasm.

I was delighted with the girls attitude, skill and effort. The speed with which they picked up on game strategy and positional play bodes well for the future - this is a team going places! Well done girls - its impossible to pick between you - so as far as I am concerned the whole team is the Player of the Tournament!
