U11A v Oakham School

On Wednesday 16th November the U11A team played Oakham School at hockey.

The girls started off confidently and scored quickly to take a 1-0 lead.  Oakham were undeterred by this early lead and struck back quickly to make it 1-1.

This seemed to energise the Copthill team who stepped their game up considerably. Some lovely defending from Charlotte Dean and Gemma O'Flaherty ensured that Jemima Hitcham (in goal) had a quiet first half.  Some good positional play from Lucy Colman, Ivy Kettlewell and India North, saw us with a well deserved lead 3-1 at half time.

The Oakham girls came out with determination at the start of the second half. They kept our defence busy but some lovely goalkeeping ensured a clean sheet for Jemima.  Lily Newman, in midfield, played confidently and was instrumental in getting the ball forward for Copthill. She was ably assisted by Molly Salter and the work rate of these two plus India meant that the Oakham defence was constantly on their toes in the last quarter of the game.

Player of the Match went to Ivy Kettlewell. Not only did she perform a sterling role in midfield throughout the game, she also scored possibly the best goal that I have ever seen on the Saxon astro.  Determined not to let the ball go out of play, she chased after it, pulled it round and back into the 'D', performed a textbook slap shot and to the utter amazement of everyone watching managed to score from the narrowest of angles.  We are always telling the girls to never give up and to chase the ball and this proves why!

The match finished with a fantastic 6-1 win to Copthill. Well done girls, you were amazing!

Team :Lucy Colman, India North (captain), Lily Newman, Molly Salter, Gemma O'Flaherty, Jemima Hitcham, ivy Kettlewel and Charlotte Dean.
