U10 Mixed Hockey "Quicksticks" Tournament Wednesday 2nd November 2016

Mixed hockey is a great format for our girls and boys to come together to play and learn from each other. Copthill took two year 5 mixed teams of six players to City of Peterborough Hockey Club on Wednesday. The U11 tournament was organised under the England Hockey "Quicksticks" rules; a basic 5 minute, small pitch, 4 -aside game, to suit those who are new to hockey. As such, a larger ball is used, and most of the technical rules go out of the window...it was going to be an afternoon all about adapting to the rules, forgetting the technicalities...just hit and rush with maximum enthusiasm!

Two evenly matched Copthill teams were creatively named Team 1 and Team 2! Team 1; Emily, Gemma, Ivy, Raife, Henry and Sam, guided by myself, played determined and skillful hockey to win 5 of their 6 pool games. The loss came against the eventual winners Fulbridge - a temporary loss of positional play was our undoing! Team 2; Isla, India, Eliana, Gilbert, Felix and Edmund, guided by Mr Howitt, progressed serenely through the pool stages, scoring at will, and winning all their games! Well done.

When the finals came round, out of the 14 teams in the tournament Copthill Team 2 deservedly found themselves in the 1st/2nd Final, and Copthill Team 1 just missed out to compete in the 3rd/4th Final. Both finals were hard fought, against teams that were excelling in their interpretation of the rules (or lack of them?!) Anything went, and we were perhaps guilty of hesitation as we tried to put to the back of our minds those technical rules that we usually play. In the end, two goals went against us in both Finals, so we finished the tournament in a very respectable second and fourth positions.

We soon got over the disappointment of the finals, as we reflected on a fun and energetic afternoon of hockey, in which we played very well, with maximum enthusiasm, and reached both finals on a sunny autumn afternoon. Many thanks to the parents who came to support us.

(Oh, and did I mention there was a lake of orange squash and a mountain of jaffa cakes?!)

Nick
