U11C v Brooke Priory Wednesday 9th May

I love playing our friends from Brooke Priory - in every fixture I have managed a team we get a thriller. The match today was no exception...

Captained ably by Oliver, Copthill were put into bat by our guests. With four overs to face each our first pair; Callum and Rohan, got us off to a flying start. Raife and Henry then accelerated away, hitting out all over the park, and collecting a top pair score of 37. Aran and Josh, then Lawrence and Oliver cemented the middle order, deftly accumulating runs and only losing one wicket, before Alec and Callum completed the innings in exciting style; a second wicket down and a big six! All the boys showed off their skills during the innings; with steely concentration, powerful hitting and lots of good running. Copthill finished with a very healthy 227 runs.

In the field we rotated our bowling attack so all players had minimum of two overs. The team agreed beforehand that bowling accuracy was going to be key to the match, we had to keep the extras tally as low as possible. Rohan demonstrated that ethic from the start with a very tidy first over. The fielding was also impressive; lots of brave catching (Aran under a ball that came down from the clouds!) and accurate throwing, which kept the pressure on. Wickets started to fall in the middle order as Oliver, Henry, Raife, Lawrence and Josh got to work delivering an excellent bowling display that put our guests behind the run rate.

With 4 overs left Brooke Priory needed an unlikely 50 runs to win. Copthill perhaps lost a little of their concentration, and the final Brooke Priory pair started to swing their bats, amassing boundary after boundary. It was going to be close! Two sixes off Rohan's final over looked to have sealed it for the visitors, but critically Rohan struck back with a wicket, before handing the ball to Callum, who bowled a controlled final over. The umpires conferred to review their scorecards and agree that there was only one run in it. Brooke Priory had scored an amazing 226 runs!

Congratulations to all the players who took part, making it such a close and enjoyable game on a beautiful sunny afternoon. Who knew cricket could be that exciting?!
