U11C Cricket v Witham Hall - 2018

Copthill’s U11C XI came away with a resounding win against Witham Hall School, beating the opposition by around 48 runs.

Captain Marcus Oliver lost the toss and Witham put Copthill into bat. Opening pair Edward Grooby and Will Wood started strongly, building a partnership of 29 to start the innings. Edward, in particular, batted very confidently, scoring 5 runs off the bat and seeing off some very strong bowlers. The next pair comprised of Marcus Oliver and Aran Chauhan. The two put on a brilliant partnership, both scoring runs. The highlight of the pairing was a massive six hit over sqaure leg by Marcus. The pairs that followed kept the score ticking over nicely, Ralph Berry and Callum Riddle also contributing significantly. The pairing of Marcus and Aran came back in to finish the innings, bringing Copthill to a huge 380 runs, and leaving Marcus on an unbeaten 18 off the bat (one 6 and two 4s).

Copthill’s first few bowlers bowled some very tight overs to begin Witham’s innings, fast-bowlers Henry Wickham and Callum Riddle, as well as Aran Chauhan, keeping the openers scores down. However, some lapses of concentration and some rash fielding efforts led the Witham batsmen to steadily creep up on Copthill’s total. Copthill began to strike back, though, in the second half of the innings. Edward Grooby and Peyton Turner claimed a run-out each, reducing the opposition total. The introduction of Seb Graves kept the total, only going for 3 runs off his first two overs. Henry Wickham finished extremely strongly, bowling one batsman and having another caught behind by Marcus Oliver. He finished with figures of 2-20 off his 5 overs. Witham finished their innings on 332, a strong innings but not quite reaching Copthill’s total.

Congratulations to all the boys who represented the team. The batting Player of the Match was Marcus Oliver (18*) and the bowling Player of the Match was Henry Wickham (5-0-2-20).
