U9 & U10 Rugby v St Hugh's - Wednesday 1st November 2017

U10s vs St Hugh’s

Although coming up short in a tough fixture, an impassioned and spirited performance from Copthill’s U10 side saw them score three tries against a strong St Hugh’s team.

Copthill got off to a literal flying start thanks to captain Beck Mundey, who received the ball from the first whistle and darted through the St Hugh’s defensive line to score in the left hand corner of the pitch. In a match that was fast-paced throughout, St Hugh’s replied almost instantly with a similar play, soon scoring again to take the lead.

This began a sustained period of possession for the visitors, but some crucial tackles from Ed Grooby and Will Wood stopped their advancement up the field. St Hugh’s eventually made a couple more breakthroughs to score.

Despite the scoreline being against them, Copthill’s boys continued to work hard for each other throughout the game, scoring two more tries in the game. The first came through a powerful pick and drive play from Man of the Match Colin Earle, supported by Ralph Berry. The second followed a diving pass from Joshua Hunter mid-tackle that would be highly praised at any standard of professional rugby. The move was finished off by some strong running from Will Wood (who’s running throughout the game showed great drive and purpose) and, finally, James Hayes, who scored his try beside the post whilst holding off several St Hugh’s tackle attempts.

Even though the score at the end of the game was 11-3 to the visiting side, the U10s should not be disheartened with their display. It demonstrated a great deal of character, with a fighting spirit highlighted by Colin Earle’s constant probing runs and important tackles. With a couple more well worked drills, this Copthill side could be a force to reckoned with very soon.

Mr Day

The Copthill U9 rugby team produced another excellent display of rugby at home to St Hugh's on Wednesday 1st November.

The boys' attacking lines were fantastic and they looked like scoring with every attack and if it wasn't for rotating the team at regular intervals during the game, then the scoreline would've been far superior!

The boys could have defended a little better as they let St Hugh's break through the line far too easy and need to remember to tackle the legs. It was brilliant to see them trying to pass much more as we approached the end of the game as it was becoming apparent that an individual could just easily run through and score.

The final score was 15-11 to Copthill and all the boys played superbly well and Milo E just edged the man of the match award in a team captained well by Otto S.

Well done.
